The police prevented a possible major clash between fans of the Bundesliga soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt and supporters of the second division team Darmstadt 98. Several people known to the police were checked before the confrontation ensued.
There were indications that supporters of a Bundesliga club from the Rhine-Main area had made an appointment on Friday evening at the train station in Bickenbach in southern Hesse, the police in Darmstadt said on Saturday. According to the clues, they wanted to wait for a train to stop and then attack other fans. Around 250 supporters from Darmstadt were on the train on their way back from the away game in Sandhausen.

When patrols arrived, between 80 and 100 people, some of whom were masked, were discovered in an underpass of the station. They then fled, but more than 30 were still checked. Leather gloves and bandages were discovered. This strengthened the suspicion “that they had no peaceful intentions,” the police said.
