Police operation after loud bang in backyard / helicopter supports search

Darmstadt (ots) – A loud bang from a backyard of a bank branch on Heinheimer Straße was reported to the police on Sunday (June 27th), around 4.45 p.m., by residents. In addition, witnesses said that banknotes were flying around the site and an SUV escaped from the scene.

Because it could not be ruled out that the machine was blown up, a police helicopter and the fire brigade were also involved in the search that was subsequently initiated. It quickly turned out, however, that it was not such a demolition.

As part of the search, the police stopped the searched vehicle a few minutes later in the city. The 27-year-old driver and his 29-year-old passenger were provisionally arrested. In the car, the officers found cash and a blank gun, which, according to the current state of the investigation, had been fired from shortly before. The police seized the vehicle and the weapon. Due to several road closures during the manhunt in the city center, there were brief traffic disruptions.

Whether the incident could have been a drug deal is currently under investigation by the criminal investigation department.

In this context, the police are still looking for a roughly 40-year-old man with a bald head and a brown T-shirt, who apparently collected money in the area of the crime scene. It is not yet known whether it is related to the event or just happened to be there. Relevant information is requested from the police in Darmstadt (permanent detective service) on 06151 / 969-0.
