Two police officers from Los Angeles, California, USA, were in serious condition after being shot in the head while in the service car on Saturday. Police department says it was an “ambush”.
A video of the incident, which was shared on social media, shows a person approaching the police car and then shooting at close range and fleeing.
Los Angeles sheriff Alex Villanueva, quoted by BBC, called the action a “coward”. The suspect remains on the run.
Nearly 40 US police officers were killed on the job this year, according to FBI statistics, which show that eight of them were victims of “ambushes”.
Anti-police protesters blocked the entrance to the emergency room where the two officers are being assisted, according to authorities and witnesses.
The police officers involved were not identified, but were described as a 31-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man.
“An agent and an agent were caught in an ambush while sitting in their patrol vehicle. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. Both are undergoing surgery. The suspect is still at large,” they reported on Twitter. the Los Angeles County sheriffs.
“This is just a dark way to remember that this is a dangerous job. Actions and words have consequences and our job is not made easier because people do not like law enforcement,” said Sheriff Villanueva.

In response to the attack, California Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff said he was praying for the two officers. “Every day, police officers put themselves at risk to protect our community. I hope that the perpetrator of this cowardly attack can be brought to justice quickly,” he wrote on Twitter.
