In June, on the sidelines of a demonstration in Lille against pension reform, photos of police officers sporting supremacist tattoos on their arms were published on social networks. A regional councilor (PS) for Hauts-de-France, Sarah Kerrich-Bernard, contacted the IGPN, believing that these tattoos representing the Valknut symbol could “constitute a violation of the ethical rules of the national police”.
“Insufficient legislation”
According to the elected official, who is also a lawyer, the two police officers were “sanctioned” with a reminder of the rule. The “discipline and ethics” unit of the departmental directorate of public security (DDSP) of the North considers, in fact, that the police officers have “contravened the ethical obligations, neutrality, impartiality, dignity and exemplarity (…) by not having masked, as appropriate, their tattoos.”
Despite this sanction, Sarah Kerrich-Bernard believes that “our legislation remains insufficient”. “We are working on better recognition and sanctioning of these badges, tags and symbols which are returning in large numbers in public spaces,” she continues.
Supremacism consists of considering the white Western “race” as superior to others.
