“We will not celebrate the holiday of the Ministry of the Interior again, said Valentin Popov on the occasion of the disagreements with the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior regarding the equipment, clothing and pay of the police officers.
The protest will be attended not only by the police, but also by firefighters, rescuers, persons with employment contracts and civil servants, i.e. the representatives of all branches in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, explained the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the SFSMMI Iliya Kuzmanov. Tell me which of the reforms in the interior ministry is up and running, he asked. Nothing has changed – neither with us, nor with the citizens, stated Kuzmanov. “This is what is called the Ministry of Internal Affairs is over,” he emphasized.
Valentin Popov made a retrospective of the attempts of the trade unions in the Ministry of the Interior to protect the interests of their members before each new leadership of the Ministry of the Interior. This applies to uniforms, equipment, and income, he explained. The dialogue with the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has so far been conducted through the mediation of the media, but since there is no such thing in direct contacts. Today’s minister is not responding to proposals and letters for meetings and talks, so the unions will exercise their legal right to protest.
The employees are dissatisfied with the fact that despite the agreement in principle and consensus reached in the Council for Social Partnership to raise the basic salary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, they are practically thwarted by the new minister. According to them, at the moment, things in the department are worse than the situation in 2009. “Then we thought we had reached the bottom, but now we are digging under it”, said Valentin Popov.
If the destruction in the Ministry of Internal Affairs continues at this pace, in less than 10 years Bulgarians will be crying for today’s police, according to the unionist police officers. They do not understand how normal people will come to work in the internal department under these conditions, where the starting salary is BGN 660, and the portion is BGN 120 – and the amount is before taxation with 10% tax. According to the trade unionists, only three types of people would be interested in this profession – either those who are not quite right with their evaluations and self-evaluations, or those from whom nothing else can be done, or others who have already made their scheme in a roundabout way to double their salary. For the many professionals who are still working in the system, including himself, Popov said that there are still those with unfulfilled hopes. “We are fighting for principles, not for privileges”, he was categorical. A large number of principled and honest police officers protest because they would not like one day not to have an answer to the question of their children – “why did you allow this?”
According to Popov, there is a systemic problem in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and he suspects that the system is being deliberately destroyed. “For some reason, this country doesn’t seem to need a strong police force,” he said. And he wonders why the structure that is responsible for people’s lives and property is falling apart, i.e. that of the firemen. We are the longest reforming sector and ultimately the most unreformed, Popov pointed out.
Already today, the SFSMVR will notify their colleagues from the other unions of the Ministry of the Interior, and at the beginning of next week they hope to have a common strategy with them for the protests, since so far their views do not differ much.
The trade unionists warned that they had certain signals that during the protest on July 5 this year. are prepared specialized police operations, school alarms and think that this will definitely blow up the social peace in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The situation in the country does not require it, they pointed out. And they urged these initiators not to experiment on July 5 of this year, because that would greatly increase the tension.
