Police officers in Argentina are demanding an increase in their salaries

Hundreds of police officers organized protests today, Wednesday, to demand an increase in their salaries and better working conditions, local media reports said.

The newspaper “La Nación” reported that the officers gathered in the towns of La Matenza, La Plata and La Nouz, which are all within the province of Buenos Aires.

The monthly salary of a police officer in the region reaches 30,000 pesos (400 dollars), while in the capital, “Buenos Aires”, which is not now part of the region, although it has the same name, it reaches nearly twice that amount.

Many police officers are forced to work overtime to make ends meet, and the officers participating in the protests have demanded the right to establish their own union.

The protests come in the wake of a series of serious crimes that prompted the government to announce last Friday that it had launched a large-scale security offensive in the region.
