Police officer victim of violent robbery in Brussels metro: two suspects released on conditions

A federal police officer was the victim of a violent theft in the Brussels metro last Friday. He had approached a group of young people earlier because they weren’t wearing masks. It appears he was attacked by the same people soon after, reported Het Nieuwsblad on Monday. The information was then confirmed by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. Two suspects were arrested and then released by the investigating judge after being questioned.

The facts happened on Friday evening at the Hermann-Debroux metro station in Auderghem, Brussels. The 65-year-old policeman was no longer on duty and was returning home in civilian clothes. When he saw a group of young people who, despite the obligation, did not wear a mouth mask in the metro, he reminded them of the sanitary measure. They ignored this remark. Moments later, the policeman was ambushed by a gang of young people, probably the same one he had had an exchange with earlier. They attacked and robbed him, then fled. “Several suspects could be identified and two of them were arrested the same evening”, explained the prosecutor Willemien Baert. “They were placed at the disposal of the investigating judge and, after questioning, released on conditions.”
