Bolingbrook Police Officer Shot in Southwest Suburb; Suspect in Custody
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. (WLS) — A Bolingbrook police officer was shot on Sunday night in the southwest suburb, leading to the arrest of a suspect, according to authorities.
The Bolingbrook Police Department reported on Monday morning that the injured officer is expected to recover from the incident.
The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday when officers responded to a theft complaint at a business located in the 100-block of South Bolingbrook Drive.
Upon arrival, the suspect had already fled the scene and could not be located at the time, police said. However, at approximately 7:48 p.m., the same suspect returned to the business and fired shots, causing damage to the windows and items inside the store. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, but nearby workers took cover as a precaution.
“We sought shelter for probably 30 minutes or so until we felt like the area was safe. Just so that way no one was hurt,” said Joshua Rabeanu, one of the workers.
Authorities revealed that an officer later found the suspect across the street at his residence. However, when the officer made contact with the suspect, the man opened fire, hitting the officer twice.
“There was a little bit of crossfire by the house and one of the cops got hit and they got shot,” said witness Eva Smerd.
With the assistance of the Illinois State Police, tactical measures were taken, and the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Victor Zarate, was apprehended without further incident.
The shooting has left the community in shock and disbelief.
“I’m shocked and shaken up a little bit because this never happens in Bolingbrook, Illinois. You hear about people getting robbed, but this has never happened in Bolingbrook, Illinois,” said neighbor Jonathon Cook.
The store owners stated that they are familiar with the suspect, as he is a regular customer, and they have had previous issues with him. Police have stated that charges are pending against Zarate.
