A police officer was killed in the Swedish city of Gothenburg last night. He was shot on the street in the Biskopsgården district and later died in hospital.
Police have not released the agent’s name. It is clear, however, that it concerns a man in his early thirties, who had only been employed for a few years.
Much still unclear
The circumstances under which he was shot are still unclear. The Swedish police report that the first investigation shows that he and a colleague approached some people on the street in the evening. Both wore their uniforms and were therefore recognizable as police officers.
What happened next is unknown. A neighborhood investigation was immediately launched last night and officers questioned witnesses. No one has been arrested and there is no description of the suspect or suspects.
Flags at half mast
The National Police Commissioner has offered his condolences to the officer’s relatives and colleagues. “Police work can involve great risks and we must continue to try hard to minimize those risks,” he said.
There are also shocked reactions from politicians. “No one should lose his life in the course of his work,” Prime Minister Löfven said. “An attack on the police is an attack on our rule of law and on our open democratic society.”
As a tribute to the officer who was shot dead, the flags in Sweden are flown at half mast today.
