Police Officer Sentenced to Community Service for Fatal Accident Due to High Speed

The court in Den Bosch sentenced a 26-year-old police officer who caused a fatal accident last year to two hundred hours of community service on Tuesday. Niels van H. drove almost 80 kilometers too fast and hit a motorcyclist, who died on the spot.

Eindhove resident Van H. drove 129 kilometers per hour on December 6, where 50 kilometers per hour is allowed. In the collision on Dr. Cuyperslaan, a 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed.

In addition to community service, the officer also received a one-year driving ban, six months of which was conditional.

Officer violated police guidelines

The court states that Van H. acted on the report “much too eagerly and with insufficient attention to road safety”. According to police guidelines, he should have been driving 40 kilometers per hour over the speed limit. He seriously violated those guidelines, the court reported.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) previously demanded a prison sentence of ninety days, a community service of 240 hours and a driving ban of two years. The Public Prosecution Service accused him of recklessness, but the court did not agree.
