And police officer was sentenced this Thursday by the Bobigny criminal court seven months from prison suspended sentence for having dealt several blows to a mediator in the town of Sevran (Seine-Saint-Denis) in 2019, a case publicized by the broadcast of a video of the arrest.
The sentence is higher than the three months suspended prison sentence required by the public prosecutor. In the reasons for the decision, the president of the court considered that “the technique of arrest is regulatory but unsuitable, disproportionate to the situation.”
The scene filmed by a neighbor
On September 11, 2019, a traffic jam formed near the Sevran-Beaudottes RER station. Police vehicles block a street to carry out a check on a drug trafficking point.
In the long line of blocked vehicles is that of Lamine Ba, now aged 39, former city mediator, well-known figure in the neighborhood and among the police. The latter gets out of his car and asks a police officer to move his vehicle so that motorists can move around.
Two versions oppose each other at the time of the exchange. The official denounces an outrage, he claims to have been insulted, which Lamine Ba refutes, who is checked and then arrested. The scene is entirely captured by a local resident from his window.
A violent altercation
The agent tries to grab the legs of the mediator who frees himself. He punches him and the victim responds “in defense”. Shots rained down until reinforcements arrived. Another official uses his electric pulse gun. Lamine Ba ends up collapsing. Five days of total incapacity for work (ITT) are prescribed.
A dismissal of the case had been requested for this case by the Bobigny public prosecutor’s office but the investigating judge decided otherwise by referring the police officer to court for illegitimate violence.
Leaving the court, Lamine Ba declared to AFP: “I am happy, I believed in the justice of my country. It took a while but I was right to believe it. Today, he (the police officer) is convicted, we will see if he appeals”
3,000 euros for repairs
The former mediator now works in a library in Sevran and appears in films, particularly detective films, and series.
The police officer, aged 39, was also ordered to pay more than 3,000 euros in compensation for the damage suffered.
