Police Officer Kills Motorist in Angoulême: 13th Death During Police Checks in France in 2022

A motorist was killed by a police officer who used his weapon after refusing to comply early Wednesday morning in Angoulême, Charente, we learned from the prosecution. The policeman was slightly injured in the legs during this intervention, said Stéphanie Aouine, public prosecutor in Angoulême.

The facts occurred around 4:00 am near Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente, in the suburbs of Angoulême. According to a police source, the victim was injured in the chest. The prosecutor clarified that she would communicate “more during the day”.

This death in Charente comes as police unions denounce an increase in refusals to comply during road checks. In mid-May, a motorist was seriously injured in the head by the shooting of a municipal police officer in Seine-Saint-Denis after evading a control. A week later, a police commander was knocked down and seriously injured during a traffic check in Vienne (Isère).

13 deaths during police checks

In 2022, 13 people were killed by police during checks in France, a record that authorities and unions attribute to more dangerous driving behavior, while researchers blame a 2017 law modifying the use of their weapon by law enforcement.

Five police officers have been charged last year as part of these 13 cases of fatal shootings at a getaway car. The others have been released without prosecution at this stage. In 2021, around 27,700 refusals to comply had been recorded by the police and the gendarmes, an increase of almost 50% in ten years, according to official figures.
