Police officer injured in Brooklyn shooting

A police officer is recovering in hospital after being hit by three bullets late Wednesday night in Brooklyn, according to authorities.

According to Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, an unmarked police vehicle with two officers and a sergeant responded to a shooting call at the corner of Madison Street and Broadway around 11:10 p.m.

Shea said that in that incident, a man approached a white SUV that contained three other men inside and fired at the car.

According to Shea, one of the men inside the SUV was shot and killed; another suffered a gunshot wound, and a third was not injured.

About five minutes later, according to Shea, officers with the unmarked police car were driving a few blocks away when they spotted a man walking along the side of Saratoga Park. Shea said that when officers got out of the vehicle and approached, the man immediately pulled out a firearm and began firing.

According to Shea, one of the policemen was hit three times: one on his bulletproof vest, one on his leg and one on his butt. Shea said the officer is expected to make a full recovery and is at Kings County Hospital.

Shea said the two officers who came to the scene fired their guns. The officer who was hit fired nine times, and the other officer fired 12 times, according to Shea. The sergeant at the scene did not fire his gun, Shea said.

The man who shot the officer was taken into custody at the scene, Shea said. The police commissioner said the detained man is 26 years old and a “known gang member.”

A firearm was recovered at the scene, according to Shea.

As of May 9, there have been at least 451 shootings in 2021 in the city, up from 242 last year, an 86% increase, according to the latest police data.
