Quattro, the dog who traveled to the Paris Olympics, specializes in searching for explosives and firearms.
Heikki Nyman
A senior constable working in Mikkeli Heikki Nyman got an exceptional job this summer. Nyman was sent to the Paris Olympics with his 7-year-old patrol explosive dog Quattro.
– They called me and said that they were thinking of sending me to Paris for a month in July to see if I was interested. I didn’t think about it for a long time, but it was immediately clear that I was available, Nyman says on the other end of the phone from Paris.
France had previously asked European countries for police dogs trained to detect explosives and firearms as official assistance for the Paris Olympics. Police dog Quattro has special training for these tasks. In addition to Nyman, Chief Constable Mika Lekkerimäki and the special explosives dog Nalli was sent to Paris from the Itä-Uusimaa police department.
– We have been here for three weeks, and the last week is now underway. After all, this has been a memorable experience to be part of an international event of this size, says Nyman.

Nyman works at the Eastern Finland Police Department in surveillance and alarm duties. Nyman has been working with the Quattro Belgian Shepherd for six years. According to Nyman, Nyman and Quattro’s work at the Paris Olympics went very well.
– Typically, working days are such that we do safety checks with dogs in various places. In practice, a place or area is defined for us that needs to be checked, and we go there with the dog, says Nyman.
– The dog sniffs through the area, and if it happens to find something, the dog stops its activity and marks the find by freezing to the smell of the substance it is looking for.
Naturally, Nyman cannot comment on whether Quattro has made any findings about explosives or firearms at the Paris Olympics.

The work has been done together with the police of France and other countries. Nyman first told Itä-Savo, which reported on the matter, that according to his opinion, the training of Finnish explosive dogs is top class.
The security arrangements at the Paris Olympics are extensive. Among other things, Yle reported earlier in the spring that due to the volatile world situation, for example, the threat of terrorism has raised concerns in Paris.
It has been interesting for Nyman to work together with international colleagues. He says that the atmosphere in Paris has generally been excellent.
– The encouragement and shouting has been loud. Especially when the French have done fairly well, the Home Audience can make a noise. It’s been a really good atmosphere, the city is bustling with people and stuff. Yes, we have reached the Olympic atmosphere here, even though we are here as working people.
Nyman says that he follows sports in general, and the Olympic Games have been watched a lot in the past. Nyman says that he has been able to follow some competitions in Paris in his spare time.
– I would not have thought that such an opportunity would open up, Nyman says.
