Police Mistakenly Respond to Military Exercise in Gelderland

The police turned out en masse on Tuesday after a report about “camouflaged people with weapons” in Gelderland. But it turned out to be an exercise by the Airmobile Brigade, writes Broadcasting Gelderland Thursday.

The police received a report from Meddo, a village near Winterswijk, on Tuesday evening. There were armed people in camouflage clothing walking around. Several surveillance vehicles and a police helicopter were sent to check the report.

Upon arrival in Meddo, it turned out to be a military exercise by the Airmobile Brigade. This is a special unit of the Royal Netherlands Army that can be deployed worldwide.

The Airmobile Brigade trained both at night and during the day with soldiers on foot and off-road vehicles. The police were not aware of the exercise.

A Defense spokesman says that the municipality, police and province have been informed of the exercise. But the exercise turned out not to be in the central digital overview of Defense. As a result, it was “not easy to find” by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

After a brief discussion between the police and the military unit, the officers returned. The unit was able to continue the exercise without any problems.
