On March 8, near the intersection of NW 71st Street and 12th Avenue, by Northwestern High School, an African-American man lost his life, after a police officer I shot him in the head because he allegedly felt threatened by the weapon the victim was carrying.
After investigations, Antwon Cooper’s family attorney revealed that there is very clear evidence from the body camera of one of the policemen where you can see what really happened that fateful day.
According to police chief Manny Morales, he shared in a press conference that one of the agents realized that Cooper was armed and after a struggle he fired.
The new version that has come to light, obtained by the body camera and that the lawyer Rawsi Williams assures is what really happened.
“He shot him in the head at close range. He shot her in the head at close range with another officer right there and Mr. Cooper wasn’t waving a gun.. Mr. Cooper was not holding a gun. Mr. Cooper was not attacking an officer. And that sergeant used deadly force,” Williams said in remarks obtained by Local 10 News.
The Miami Police Department, noor has revealed the name of the sergeant who killed the man who would turn 35 next month. Tilisha Cooper, mother of the victim demands justice: “He’s a murderer, he killed my son,” the angry woman yelled.
Police Chief Morales met with the Cooper family and Attorney Williams to continue the homicide investigation. Until now, it has not been said if the officer involved is still working at the police station Or if it will go to trial.
The Cooper family will file a civil rights lawsuit next week.
