Police investigate connection: bomb threats at five train stations

In the last few days there have been several bomb threats at Austrian train stations. After Graz, Linz and Salzburg, there is said to have been a two-hour closure at St. Pölten train station on Wednesday evening. A threat against the train station in Klagenfurt is said to have been received on Wednesday evening.

AUSTRIA. There have already been five bomb threats against train stations in Austria this week. This reinforces the initial suspicion that this was a series of threats. So far, however, the all-clear could be given at the respective train station after just a few hours. However, rail traffic was always stopped for a short time.

Five train stations affected

The first threat was sent to the State Police Department (LPD) on Monday. Styria a. The East and Central Stations were then evacuated. The former was released again after just an hour, and the all-clear was also given at the main train station around 9 p.m. At this time, traffic was also reopened after the temporary closure.

On Tuesday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m., an email containing a threat was sent to the LPD Upper Austria a. Linz main station was then evacuated and the state service center (LDZ) was cleared. There was a large-scale operation involving special operations groups, dog squads and explosives experts, which lasted until shortly after 5:30 p.m. Here too, the all-clear was given.

It was then Wednesday afternoon Salzburg so far and the main station had to be evacuated due to a bomb threat and train traffic was temporarily stopped. Passengers had to leave the trains. Shortly before 4 p.m. the threat of explosives was received by the Salzburg LPD. A search with explosives detection dogs turned up nothing and the lockdown was lifted around 6:30 p.m.

It came in that same evening St. Pölten to a threat that was received by LPD Lower Austria via email at 10 p.m. Here too, the station was briefly closed and searched. Again nothing suspicious was found. An hour earlier an email was received from LPD Carinthia one in which a previously unknown person threatened to detonate explosive devices. The process and result were the same as in Lower Austria.

So far only a false alarm

This year there have already been threats of explosive devices and bombs in Innsbruck, Vienna, Klagenfurt and Feldkirchen. In addition to train stations, schools, events, private homes and public spaces have also been repeatedly hit by threats this year. It is currently being investigated whether the bomb threats made against five train stations this week are related.

In any case, these large-scale operations involve a lot of effort. In many places, in addition to police officers, drones, helicopters, sniffer dogs and the Cobra were in use. Although it has always been a false alarm, the police still investigate every threat and take it seriously.
