Police Injured in North Philadelphia as Officers Attempt to Disperse Crowds

Several officers ‍were injured in⁤ North Philadelphia as⁤ police attempted to disperse a large crowd on Broad ⁤Street early Sunday morning. The incident occurred when a group of over 500 people and vehicles gathered‍ near a Sunoco gas station in‌ the 1300 ‌block of Broad Street. A cell phone video captured two individuals hanging out ‌of a car ‌and performing dangerous stunts, while two others recorded the ⁣scene.⁢ One ⁤officer sustained a broken ankle​ after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The injured‍ officer was taken to⁤ Jefferson University Hospital for treatment.

Mayor Jim⁢ Kenney expressed his gratitude to the officers and wished them ​a ⁢speedy recovery, stating that car meets are ‍disruptive, reckless, and often dangerous. He‍ highlighted the efforts ​of the Police Department in monitoring‍ and addressing such events. ‍Additional officers‍ also sustained injuries but were treated and released.‌

Witnesses reported that the incident began as a party on the rooftop‌ of an apartment building, which⁣ then ​escalated when someone‍ pulled the fire alarm.‍ The crowd then​ moved to a nearby gas station, where they began blocking the intersection. ‍Residents called 911, and dozens of police officers arrived to ⁤disperse the crowd. Cell phone ⁤footage showed several ⁢individuals ‌being⁣ detained.

This incident was one of ​five that officers ⁤responded to involving ⁢large crowds of people ⁤and vehicles.⁤ Earlier incidents occurred on Tacony Street, at the​ Philadelphia Mills Mall, and near Halderman and Roosevelt Boulevard. Fortunately, no injuries were reported ⁢in ​those incidents.

John​ McNesby, ​the president of ⁣FOP Lodge ⁤#5, expressed concern over ⁣incidents ​like these, stating‍ that the city is becoming accustomed to such⁢ events. He ​highlighted the challenge faced by ⁣the short-staffed police department ​and called for ⁣an increase in the number of officers to handle such situations.

Police ‍are​ currently searching for the driver of the vehicle that hit the officer. Last month, Philadelphia⁣ City Council approved legislation to crack down ​on illegal street racing and ⁢car meet-ups.
