Accompanied by a large police presence in bulletproof vests, a women’s convent in Russia was evacuated after several scandals. According to today’s information from the authorities, the nuns are no longer allowed to enter the building not far from the city of Yekaterinburg east of the Ural Mountains because there are violations of fire protection and hygiene requirements there.
A court had previously ruled that it was too dangerous for the residents there. Videos now showed how dozens of women with crosses in hand surrounded by police officers left the monastery against their will. According to the governor responsible, they should now be housed in hotels or social facilities.
The monastery had hit the headlines several times. The controversial confessor named Sergej was arrested there only in December. Russian media published a video in which the former monk called on supporters to “die for Russia”. One court interpreted this as a call to suicide.
At the beginning of the pandemic a year ago, he described the coronavirus as a “pseudo-pandemic” and held services despite a ban. Several nuns were injured when he was arrested.
