It was local residents who tipped off the police. They knew that the man in their street was already caught in 2007 with a lot of war equipment in his house. They had seen how he had cluttered up his house again. The investigating judge of Veurne had a house search carried out yesterday to find out whether there were also prohibited weapons.
The police department of the Polder police zone received help from DOVO. He came with 2 trucks to load 7 containers full of war ammunition. Further investigation will determine whether the explosives are prohibited weapons. The collector maintains that most of the ammunition has been defused. But DOVO is not convinced of this and that is why the ammunition was taken to check and possibly even destroy.
The prosecutor’s office is awaiting the DOVO investigation to decide whether it will prosecute the man for possession of prohibited weapons. On the one hand, it is clear that the man is an avid collector with no ill intentions. On the other hand, the man knows well what he was doing as he was already caught in 2007. Then it was an even larger amount than now. In addition to ammunition, there were also real heavy weapons of war. Since then, gun laws have become much stricter. The collector should have had his collection regularized but he didn’t.
