The object that police officers found on Monday afternoon in De Hulk recreation area in Scharwoude in North Holland in the search for the missing student Sumanta Bansi, turns out to be a broken shovel. Police assume the woman was buried using a shovel, but it is uncertain whether the found part was used to hide the body of the 22-year-old pregnant woman.
The police writes to have determined that the woman was most likely buried and that a used shovel may have been broken or broken during the clogging attempt. Officers also suspect that the shovel would have been thrown into the water afterwards.
The force writes on Twitter that the part of the shovel has been found in the water. “This part could be very important for our investigation,” said the Noord-Holland police. The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) is conducting further research into the shovel and what the part was used for.
22-year-old Bansi suddenly disappeared in 2018. The police is assuming a crime because, among other things, her bank cards, passport and social media accounts have not been used since February of that year.
The police previously thought that Bansi is buried in the Robbenoordbos, in the head of North Holland. Multiple searches in this large forest have not yet led to the find of Bansi.
In November, the police made three arrests in the case: a 40-year-old man from Hoorn, his 63-year-old father and a 34-year-old cousin from Rijswijk. The man from Hoorn is still under suspicion of involvement in Bansi’s disappearance.
