Peshawar (Pakistan) (AFP) – Two men killed an officer escorting a group of polio vaccinators in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, the second such incident in two days, police said.
The attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province comes after two men killed another policeman guarding a vaccination team, an act claimed by the local Taliban.
“Two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the police officer who was guarding two female members of the polio vaccination team from the Sheikh Utar area, killing him on the spot,” Tank district commander Sajad told AFP. Khan.
Pakistan is one of the two countries in the world where polio is still endemic, but this year there has been only one case, compared to 84 detected in 2020, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
