“Police Criticized for Arrests at Anti-Monarchy Protest During King Charles’s Coronation”

Some 11,500 police officers were on the scene in London today. According to the police, there were indications that protesters wanted to daub monuments with paint and break barriers.

Graham Smith, the leader of the anti-monarchist group Republic, is said to have been arrested. Signs with ‘not my king’ on them were confiscated. Dozens of environmental activists were also arrested.

Criticism of police

Human rights organizations have criticized the police’s actions. Recently, a controversial law was quickly passed that gives the English police more powers to counter protests.

British police in London this morning arrested six people protesting against the royal family ahead of Charles’s coronation. According to British media, Graham Smith was one of them.

The coronation ceremony concluded this afternoon with the traditional balcony scene at Buckingham Palace, with King Charles and Queen Camilla waving to the crowd. Prince William and Princess Catherine and their children were also present.

Prince Harry was not there as announced in advance. He left for the United States immediately after his father’s coronation to celebrate his son Archie’s birthday. Prince Andrew was also not part of the balcony scene.

Concert Windsor Castle

Tomorrow night there will be a big concert at Windsor Castle near London to conclude the coronation weekend. Stars such as Katy Perry and Lionel Richie then perform. Some 20,000 spectators are expected.
