Police convoy ambushed: thirteen dead | Abroad

It is one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in the country in recent years. The dead include five police officers and eight office workers.

The attack on the security convoy took place in the municipality of Coatepec Harinas in the central state of Mexico and was probably carried out by gang members. At the time, the agents were engaged in operations against armed groups in the area, according to local Security Minister Rodrigo Martinez-Celis. “The attack is an insult to the state. We will respond with full force and enforce the law, ”said the minister.

The National Guard of Mexico, the police and the armed forces have started a manhunt for the perpetrators by land and air. It is unclear how many suspects have already been killed or injured in the ambush.

The state of Mexico, near the capital, Mexico City, is one of the regions of the country with the most violence. This is due to the presence of multiple criminal gangs. More than 300,000 people have been killed since the Mexican government deployed the military in 2006 to combat drug cartels.
