According to police, the 41-year-old accelerated when officers tried to stop him on Monday evening. They pursued him and the man ended up crashing his car into a lamppost. According to police, he first got out and then fled on foot, throwing away his belongings. The driver then allegedly got into a fight with the officers. They were only able to calm him down with the electric device.
Drugs and cash
The police even ordered drug dogs from Aachen to find the discarded items. The officers eventually found more than a kilo of drugs in the bushes and in the car, as well as cash in a five-figure amount. When they took the man’s personal details, they were amazed – the man is probably a kind of criminal celebrity in Wuppertal.
“King of Berliner Platz”
The man has become known as a convicted drug dealer through numerous crimes. In Wuppertal he is also called the “King of Berliner Platz”, as an allusion to his home district and one of the main drug trafficking centers. He was convicted in June 2021.
“At the time, he was sentenced to nine years in prison and was ordered to be placed in a rehabilitation facility,” explained Wolf Tilman Baumert of the Wuppertal public prosecutor’s office. “After two and a half years of the prison sentence had been served, he was sent to the LVR clinic in Bedburg Hau and, amazingly, was granted permanent leave. And it was during this leave that he was able to commit the new crime.”
How the apparently relaxed prison conditions with day release or “permanent leave”, as the public prosecutor calls it, in the Bedburg Hau forensic clinic could have come about is now being investigated.
