Nuns were forcibly removed from their convent in Russia for a series of violations of fire safety regulations and health rules that led to police intervention today.
Videos from the police operation showed dozens of women holding crosses being taken out of a monastery near the city of Yekaterinburg. According to regional authorities, they will be accommodated in hotels and elsewhere.
The monastery has repeatedly attracted media attention. In December, his confessor, known as Sergei, was detained after posting a video urging people to “die for Russia.” The court described this as a call to suicide.
The former monk said the coronavirus was a “pseudo-pandemic” and insisted he continue to hold church services despite restrictions due to the pandemic. Several nuns were injured when he was arrested in December.
