Police believe there is a human cause behind the break in the submarine cable on Svalbard – NRK Troms and Finnmark

On the night of January 7, one of two submarine cables to Svalbard stopped working.

The cables provide internet and other communication to the archipelago. Now the police have come one step closer to finding out what – or who – is behind it.

The Troms police district, together with Space Norway, which owns the cable, has investigated what has happened. They have been in the sea area with

The Governor is the government’s highest representative in Svalbard. The Governor is also the Chief of Police, notary public and assistant judges at the lower court, and also has other public functions.

– The preliminary studies strengthen the hypothesis that it is external influences that have led to one cable losing the connection.

This is what police attorney Ronny Jørgensen in the Troms police district says Bergens Tidende.

Also carries power

Jørgensen does not want to go into detail about what has been found, but says it is more against people being behind the damage, than that it is nature that has caused it.

No one has so far been charged or suspected in the case.

There has been no break in the fiber cable itself, but some of the power has been broken.

The power supply is integrated in the approximately 2 centimeter thick cable which is 1,400 kilometers long.

The failure was discovered on a stretch between 130 and 230 kilometers from Longyearbyen. The cable runs from relatively shallow to very deep water.

The current in the cable usually comes from the mainland. But after electricity was switched on from Svalbard, technicians have made it work again. In this way, the Svalbard community has once again been prepared for two cables.
