India has a dark side in the form of the practice of human sacrifice which is still carried out in remote areas. The police intervened to catch the culprit.
The Indian police recently arrested 5 suspected perpetrators of human sacrifice rituals at the Guwahati Temple. Actually, this case happened 3 years ago and shocked the community.
Guwahati regional police commissioner, Diganta Barah, said that the five suspects were involved in the murder of a woman named Shanti Shaw who was used as an offering.
“The five people planned to kill the woman. A total of 12 people took part,” said Barah, Tuesday (4/4/2023) as quoted from AFP.
The five suspects were arrested at different times between March 25 and April 1. Meanwhile, there are still 7 other people being hunted by the police.
Barah explained that the masterminds of this plot had been caught. He is Pradeep Pathak who argued that he was performing a ritual to commemorate the death of his brother.
“The suspect seems to believe that sacrifice can appease the soul of the deceased,” he said.
Pathak presented Shaw by beheading him with a machete. This was done when the victim visited the temple.
This sadistic murder was not immediately discovered because at first the police only found Shaw’s body at the location. Meanwhile, the identification process will only be completed in January 2023.
In fact, the ritual of human sacrifice is not new to India. India’s National Crime Records Bureau reported at least 103 cases of human offerings from 2014-2021.
The perpetrators make offerings with the reason to please the gods. But rituals like this are common in remote areas where belief in magic and the occult is still very strong.
In addition to the case that befell Shaw, last year the police also arrested 2 people on charges of killing a 6-year-old child in New Delhi. The suspects revealed they killed the child as an offering to get rich.
