Police: 80-year-old in Western Pomerania loses money and jewelry to scammers

With a shock phone call, an 80-year-old woman was cheated out of a large sum of cash and jewelry by scammers. The police warn of the brazen scam.

Greifswald

On Friday, an 80-year-old from Greifswald fell victim to a brazen scam. According to the police, the unknown perpetrators again deceived a dramatic emergency situation. At around 11:30 a.m., she called a woman posing as her daughter, claiming that she had caused a traffic accident that left a dead person. She would only be released from custody if she paid bail.

Man picked up money and jewelry

The caller also asked the 80-year-old woman from Greifswald about money and valuables. She stated that she had several thousand euros and jewelery worth several thousand euros at home. Then, around 1 p.m., a man appeared at the 80-year-old’s apartment, who picked up the money and jewelry. The property damage incurred amounts to around 25,000 euros.

The fraud was only noticed when the senior told her son-in-law about the call. According to the police, he explained to her that the alleged accident and her daughter’s arrest did not exist – and that she should file a complaint against unknown persons.

Background: Shock calls with imaginary deadly accidents are increasing

The police warn of such scams: There are no bails in Germany. Relatives can therefore not be bought out of prison. If the real police informs about an accident of a relative, there will never be any money demands!

Anyone who is unsure whether something has happened to the relatives should call the real relatives themselves and dial the telephone number themselves. If in doubt, call the police on 110.
