The brand’s fastest model offers a number of interesting features, including the absence of a rear window. Why did the car company take this decision?
The Polestar company showed off the new Polestar 4 electric crossover at the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show, which is the fastest model in its history. In addition, it also offers an interesting design, which is particularly interesting due to the absence of a rear glass.
Instead, we see a body panel painted in the car’s color at the back, which connects to the trunk lid and ends under the black-painted roof spoiler. It houses a protrusion with a camera, while the roof received photochromic glass.
At the same time, the car company’s unusual solution by today’s standards is not a bolt from the blue. It appeared for the first time with the Polestar Precept concept, presented in 2020. The solution for the production Polestar 4 is almost identical, but unlike the concept, the crossover has retained traditional rear-view mirrors.
The car manufacturer then solved the rear view by placing a high-resolution camera in the fin on the roof, which transmits the image to the display in the center rear-view mirror. However, the display can also be deactivated, so that the driver can also see the crew in the back seats.
And how does the automaker justify this solution? “The removal of the rear window is a wonderful functional improvement,” colleagues from Automotive News quote the words of the CEO of the brand, Thomas Ingenlath. “At night, you don’t just see two small dots in your rearview mirror, but much more. Plus, you can check on your kids at the touch of a button.“
It will be interesting to see how customers react to the new solution. Production of the model should begin in November, and the car will be positioned between the Polestar 2 sedan and the larger Polestar 3 SUV.
The more powerful version with a pair of electric motors, a combined output of 400 kW, a maximum torque of 686 Nm and a range of up to 560 km according to WLTP promises to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The weaker version has only rear-wheel drive, 200 kW power and a range of around 600 km.
The introduction of the model to the European markets is expected during the beginning of next year, while the expected price is 60,000 euros, i.e. approximately 1.4 million crowns.
