Polar wave: Narbonne, Leucate, Draguignan… these cities which broke cold records this Sunday

In total, eighteen municipalities recorded an unprecedented level of freshness for the month of April this Sunday morning, as shown by Météo France.

“In April do not discover you of a thread”. The proverb never had as much meaning as this Sunday morning. On April 3, 2022, many cities recorded temperature records. Météo France explains that the “sometimes clear” sky generated a “marked nocturnal cooling” overnight from Saturday to Sunday.

Leucate, Draguignan, Laval, Cassis, Albi, Narbonne… In total, eighteen cities are concerned. In the region, the Aude was particularly affected with 0.3°C recorded in Narbonne, while the previous record was 1.5°C almost 31 years ago! In Leucate, the thermometer fell to 2.4°C, half a degree less than in 1998 (during the previous record).

But it was in Provence that the mercury plunged to negative temperatures, reaching -1.1 ° C in Draguignan and -4.5 ° C in Peyrolles-en-Provence. In Finistère, it was -2.4 ° C in Brest-Gauipavas, the town breaking a 1978 record.

Frost: a nightmare for arborists

Unfortunately, this cold snap did a lot of damage to the crops. After a devastating frost episode last year, winegrowers and other arborists are once again faced with the threat of frost, and are doing everything to protect the fruit of their labor. But the threat of losing their future harvest is very present.

The mildness of recent weeks has caused the early appearance of buds, including for some fruit trees, which are already in bloom. Abnormally low temperatures since Saturday should persist tonight, according to Météo France forecasts, and at least until Monday morning. The thaw is not expected until Tuesday or Wednesday.
