Orsa Predator Park sent out a press release this week informing the public that two polar bear cubs have been born there. It is the polar bear mother Hope who gave birth to the two cubs on Monday, however, it is too early for the vets to go in to the cubs so until it is possible to follow the new family via cameras.
There are great risks for polar bear cubs, the statistics for survival are not so good during the first critical time. It has been shown that only around 50% of the newborn pups survive the first few weeks. Therefore, it is extra important that Hope gets as much peace and quiet as possible so the zoo has taken extra care by reducing the possibility of moving near the stable building as a visitor.
Zoo manager Pernilla Thalin says:
Now you are nervous to say the least because we do not have the same visual contact in the stable as we had last year, now this year we have to rely more on sounds that we hear. But so far it sounds good, screams are mixed with sucking sounds and sometimes it is of course quiet when they are all asleep. Now we are following the development in Hope’s stable with excitement.
Hope arrived at Orsa in 2018 from Antibes Zoo in France.
