A plane from Russia’s Polar Airlines accidentally landed on a frozen river this morning. The Soviet-era Antonov-24 landed on the Kolyma River in the Yakutia region, in Russia’s far northeast.
According to a spokesperson for the East Siberian Transport Authority, the pilot made a mistake. Local media say no one was injured.
In a brief statement, Polar Airlines said only that “an An-24 landed next to the runway at Zyrjanka Airport.” According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia, all thirty passengers got off the plane safely.
From the fleet
The Antonov-24 is a propeller plane with two engines. It has been used since the 1960s. More than 150 of them have crashed in the past.
The then Russian President Medvedev removed the An-24 from the Russian fleet in 2011 due to the fatal accidents. The ban on the device has been lifted this year and a small number of airlines still use the device.
