Poland’s Veto on EU Migration Pact: Prime Minister Morawiecki Stands Firm on Border Security

Poland will veto the EU migration pact at a European Council meeting next week, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced at a press conference.

Morawiecki said that at next week’s European Council meeting he would “say a resounding no to the pact plan” by maintaining Poland’s veto over illegal immigration. He added that instead of preventing illegal immigration at its “sources” and ensuring Brussels secure the borders of the European Union, European borders will remain open and the migration pact will not be implemented in practice. Meanwhile, Poland, according to him, reliably ensures the security of the border with Belarus.

Morawiecki recalled that the Law and Justice party government had already blocked a plan to resettle migrants in 2018. For now, Poland’s voice “can and should be even stronger,” Morawiecki said, referring to the fact that on October 15, the day of parliamentary elections in Poland, a referendum will take place, one of the issues of which concerns Brussels’ proposal to distribute asylum seekers between states. EU members. The Polish prime minister called on voters to say “no” to the distribution of migrants in a referendum.

“Let us Poles do this first, and our voice will be heard throughout Europe,” he said. “The reality of many European cities and suburbs today is destroyed streets, looted shops, raped women and fear of going out in the evening.”

Morawiecki reproached the former Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk – Chairman of the main Polish opposition party Civic Platform and former President of the European Council, and then former Chairman of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament, in that he supported the migration agreement along with Manfred Weber, the current leader of the EPP parliamentary group. Thus, Tusk, according to Morawiecki, jeopardized the security of Poland.

“The party of Tusk and Weber wants to push a pact through the European Parliament next week, which will ultimately force Poland to accept illegal immigrants,” Morawiecki said. “EU bureaucrats ignore Poland’s security, they just want to implement their crazy plan.”
