Poland’s Political Tensions: President Duda and Prime Minister Tusk Clash over Euro-Atlantic Course and Rule of Law Reforms

Last fall, the Polish people again decided in favor of the Euro-Atlantic and progressive course, securing victory in the elections for the party led by the former President of the European Council, Donald Tusk. However, the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has led the country for the past eight years, still maintains the position of the Polish president and influence in a number of important state institutions. Tusk’s government has started a large-scale “cleansing” of state institutions from the influence of its predecessors, but the president is in no hurry to give up his reins so soon.

The growing tension between the two Polish leaders, President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, threatens to paralyze the work of state institutions and delay the new government’s efforts to return to a pro-European course. Serious reforms to return to the basic principles of the rule of law are required by the European Union as a precondition for the allocation of frozen funds to Poland. While Tusk accuses the president and his political associates of undermining the long-standing rule of law, Duda accuses the new government’s reforms of illegal methods.
