Poland’s New Culture Minister Announces Closure of Public Media and Restructuring – President Duda Reacts as Tensions Rise

Poland’s new culture minister, Bartolemy Sienkiewicz, announced the closure of all public media, which were considered mouthpieces of the previous populist-nationalist government.

In a statement published on the Ex platform, Sienkiewicz indicated that the move would guarantee the operation and restructuring of public television and radio stations and the national telegraph agency.

A week ago, Poland’s new pro-EU government, led by former European Council chief Donald Tusk, announced it was firing executives at controversial state media, largely seen as government mouthpieces during the recent rule of right-wing populists, the nationalist Law and Justice party.

The government’s actions drew a sharp reaction from President Andrzej Duda, who described the media reforms as “anarchy.” Responding to Duda’s call for the rule of law in media reforms, Tusk said the actions were aimed at “restoring legal order and decency in public life”.

The new government believes that Duda himself was involved in numerous cases of violation of the constitution during the eight-year rule of “Law and Justice”.
