Moscow warned that the dangerous weapons storage facility would become a legitimate target in the event of a conflict between Russia and NATO.
Polish President Andrzej Duda told a local daily Truth that he had discussed the issue of putting American nuclear weapons in his country.
“I have to admit that when I was asked about this, I expressed our willingness,” he said, blaming what he called Moscow’s militarism in the region west of Kaliningrad.
Duda also explained that Poland has special responsibilities as a member of NATO. “In this case, we are only implementing a general policy,” he said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Duda’s comments encouraging, which she said was not particularly surprising.
“The Polish government has long kept secret its goal of absorbing US nuclear weapons stationed in Europe,” he said. RIA Novosti, which was published on Tuesday (23/4/2024).
He also said that Warsaw wants this fund to play a special role in its hostile policy towards Russia.
