Nations League – League Round

Poland – Slovenia in Volleyball League of Nations. When and what time is the match?

The White-Reds went to the Philippines with almost the strongest line-up. For the last tournament of the main phase, the coach Nikola Grbić called the midfielders Mateusz Bieńek and Karol Kłos, who were absent in Rotterdam, and the host Kamil Semeniuk. In addition, the line-up included Marcin Janusz (player), Łukasz Kaczmarek (attacker), Aleksander Śliwka (receiver) and Jakub Popiwczak (libero).

In Pasay, the rivals of the Poles will be the Slovenians, followed by the Brazilians (on Friday), the Canadians (on Saturday) and the Japanese (on Sunday).

The stake is the best placement

After two previous tournaments, Grbic’s players were in fifth place with a balance of 6-2 (14 points). The Wednesday rivals could boast of an identical balance, although a better score (18).

Even before the group stage, our volleyball players were sure of their performance in the final tournament. This one will be played in Gdańsk. However, the place in the table is important when placing individual teams.

A dramatic opening for Slovenia

The rivals started the match better. After Pajenka’s counterattack, they took the lead 3:2 and did not give it up for the next few minutes. The actions of the Poles, however, were characterized by calmness, and Kaczmarek and Semeniuk started playing great blocking. As a result, they gained six more points from 5:7.

The latter also impressed with the service, thanks to which the Biało-Czerwoni came out at 15:12. Both sides enjoyed the game, there was no shortage of long and spectacular action. The Slovenes were encouraged by the regular scoring Ziga Stern.

At 18:16, Śliwka appeared on the service and scored points again (20:16). Two mistakes of Grbic’s players at 22:19 made only a point of difference (22:21).

With the lead 24:22, it seemed that there would be no emotion. These, however, were taken care of by Popiwczak (bad party) and Śliwka (fell into the net). After two sets of Poles, the Slovenians had three chances to end the set.

Both teams, however, avoided mistakes – until the score was 28:28. Then Bieniek sent the ball in the attack from under the net. The rivals had set balls again and at 29:30 they finally used the fifth of them. Set lost at own request.

Leading only at the beginning

The failure, at least at the beginning, did not affect the morale of the White-and-Reds, they had the initiative from the first balls of the second set and developed a two-point advantage. The problem appeared after a few minutes – Śliwka did not finish the attack, Kaczmarek crashed into the car immediately. And already the Slovenes were in front (5:6).

Ineffectiveness in the offensive was not the only problem. There were also such simple technical errors as touching the net and the rivals ran away (9:13). Grbić went out of his way, he tried to save the situation sometimes on demand.

Something shifted when Semeniuk finished the counterattack. However, the distance to the rivals was still considerable (14:17). The hope for the chase faded when Urnaut scored an ace and Kurek stopped on the Mozicz block (14:20).

Another spurt followed Kurek’s good plays (19:21). It started to get nervous, but the Slovenians did not lose their heads. They won the set 25:21, and the Polish margin for error was over.

All is not lost

The third set was the last chance for the Poles. And they started it well, because after difficult attacks by Kurek and Śliwka, they were leading 6:4 in counterattacks. Although the game of the White and Reds was still wavering, they managed to keep control over the result. After Kurek’s ace, it was 13:9.

When Kochanowski was raging in the service field, and Śliwka finished the next attack, the difference increased to six points (17:11). The fourth set smelled stronger and stronger.

Finally, the Grbic volleyball players triumphed in the third set 25:20 and finally threw down the gloves to the Slovenians. The question of winning the match remained open.
