Poland is strengthening its defense capabilities

Poland is expected to receive more than 100 HIMARS rocket launchers from Lockheed Martin under a contract that could bring up to 486 units to its military. The move comes as Poland seeks to strengthen its defense capabilities, particularly in the wake of heightened regional tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

HIMARS system

Located on a six-wheeled truck chassis, the HIMARS system is known for its … precision attacks and fast movement. It can fire various types of weapons, including GMLRS guided missiles with a range of 70 kilometers and ATACMS tactical missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers. The system is operated by a small team and features advanced automation and protection against small-particle fire and artillery.

Integration of local components in defense projects

Poland also wants to integrate local components into its defense projects. In April, the country ordered 72 K239 Chunmoo rocket launchers from South Korea, modified for use by the Polish armed forces and mounted on home-made trucks. This reflects their commitment to strengthening national manufacturing capacity through partnerships with international companies such as Hanwha Aerospace.

While the first delivery from HIMARS is expected, General Kuptel acknowledged that the US priority for delivery to Ukraine could affect Poland’s timeline. He emphasized the importance of domestic production, but emphasized that it must be aligned with Poland’s current production capacity.

HIMARS in Pools leger

Poland already has a small number of HIMARS units delivered in 2023 under a previous contract. These systems are currently used by the 1st Missile Group of the Polish Army and contribute to the country’s growing defense capabilities.
