Poland Strengthens Defense Against Russia with US-Made HYMARS Systems

The Polish Minister of Defense approved the agreement on the supply of 486 US-made HYMARS systems to strengthen Poland’s defense in the event of a possible attack by Russia, AFP reported, citing BTA.

In February, the US State Department also approved this $10 billion deal.

The systems will need to be installed on local chassis and integrated to the field’s electronic command systems, which will take about two years.

Poland has already announced that it will spend more than 4 percent of its GDP on defense, which is $33 billion.

“We know that the leaders of the Kremlin have decided to rebuild the Russian empire. Our goal is to create a situation in which a Polish weapon could dissuade the aggressor,” said Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Poland has concluded major arms contracts, mainly with the United States and South Korea. In late August, Washington approved a deal involving the sale of 96 Apache attack helicopters to Poland worth $12 billion. Other contracts were signed with the Americans for 32 F-35 fighter jets and Patriot systems.

Contracts with South Korea include a thousand K2 tanks, 50 FA-50 fighter jets, 288 K239 multi-purpose missile launchers and other equipment. Poland also bought anti-aircraft missiles worth $1.9 billion from the British subsidiary of European arms group MBDA, as well as four Norwegian anti-ship missile systems for €1.4 billion.
