Majority of Poles in favor of closing churches
Even in Catholic Poland, the fact that the Catholic Church is allowed to play a special role is largely viewed critically. According to a survey, a narrow majority of Poles are in favor of closing the churches completely, even over Easter. But at least 45 percent, mainly residents of rural areas, advocate keeping it open. Especially over Easter.

Easter is a big family celebration
In Poland, Easter is traditionally celebrated in a “big round”: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandma, grandpa – everyone comes together. For this the family is traveling from all over Poland and Europe. There are mega-jams on the German highways towards Poland before the Easter weekend every year, even without a crisis.

For many Poles, going to church at Easter has been a joyful duty since childhood. This year some of them could celebrate Easter again in church despite Corona. Quite a few Poles will use this opportunity, especially in rural regions. Hygiene measures and distance rules should be observed in any case, emphasize representatives of the Catholic Church. To what extent this will be implemented in reality remains to be seen. One thing is certain: for many Poles it will again be a rather sad, and for some of them a very lonely festival.

Old custom fails again
Many Polish women will be happy about the limited Easter festival again this year. Because the Polish Easter also has a somewhat obscure tradition. For the “Śmigus Dyngus” on Easter Monday, young men pour water over strangers on the street; in families, children water the adults. Of course, that will also be canceled this year.
