Poland Refuses to Open Border with Ukraine for Grain Products After September 15: Prime Minister Morawiecki’s Announcement

Poland will not open its border with Ukraine for grain products after September 15, if the European Commission’s moratorium on Ukrainian grain imports then expires, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said.

Morawiecki’s direct speech: “I want to make it clear from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Poland that we will not open this border. Either the European Commission will agree to develop … a regulation that will continue this ban, or we will do it ourselves.”

Details: He noted that Warsaw takes this step “not against Ukrainians”, but “for Polish farmers.”

Morawiecki stressed that the closure of the border would also apply to other agricultural products.

“The Poles make money on transit, this does not threaten to destabilize the domestic market, so we facilitate this export and make transit possible,” he added.

The Polish Prime Minister recalled that, according to the decision of the European Commission, Poland should reopen the border with Ukraine for grain imports on September 15, that is, less than two months later.

background:

Earlier on July 19, the five Central European members of the European Union – Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – jointly approached the EU requesting an extension of the ban for the import of Ukrainian grain after September 15. The Central European countries fear that the termination of the “grain deal” by Russia could lead to increased grain flows and bottlenecks in these five countries.
