Germany’s government has given Poland permission to send fighter jets from old GDR warehouses to Ukraine.
In 2002, Germany sold 23 old Soviet-made MiG-29 fighters from the GDR to Poland. The government in Warsaw wants to forward an unknown number of these to Ukraine, but this required German permission.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Defense in Berlin confirmed that such permission has been granted.
Poland announced in March that it would supply Ukraine with old MiG-29 aircraft from its own air force, and the first of these were delivered earlier this month.
The MiG-29 was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s, and some of the aircraft are thus over 50 years old. Ukraine has similar aircraft and Ukrainian pilots are therefore trained in their use.
