Poland may suspend contributions to the EU budget

We are talking about all the funds of the EU budget, including the fund for the recovery of the EU countries after the coronavirus pandemic.

Polish Deputy Justice Minister Sebastian Kaleta said that Poland could suspend contributions to the EU budget if Brussels blocks the country from paying funds from European funds, writes TASS.

This is how Kaleta commented on the decision of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, which rejected the claims of Hungary and Poland against the mechanism for allocating funds from the EU budget, one of the conditions of which is the observance of the rule of law by member countries.

It is noted that at the end of 2020, the EU Council and the European Parliament agreed to consider compliance with the rule of law as a decisive criterion in the distribution of budget expenditures among community members.

We are talking about all the funds of the EU budget, including the fund for the recovery of the EU countries after the coronavirus pandemic. Poland and Hungary, which are regularly criticized by the European Union for disagreements with Brussels over the assessment of compliance with the rule of law, opposed.

Poland can receive about €58 billion from the EU Recovery Fund. Warsaw has already submitted a resource allocation plan, but it must be approved by the European Commission. However, this has not yet happened.

On December 20, 2017, the European Commission, for the first time in the history of the European Union, launched a sanctions procedure against Poland for violating the fundamental principle of the independence of the judiciary. This decision was caused by the reform of the judiciary by the Polish authorities. The new rules caused a wave of protests in the country, as well as discontent in many European capitals and investigations by the European Commission. The trial between Warsaw and Brussels has been going on for several years.

It is noted that in March last year, Poland filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union, complaining about the inconsistency with the basic EU treaties of the mechanism for linking the allocation of funds from European funds with the rule of law.

Previously it was reported that crisis in relations between Poland and the European Union enters a new round.
