Poland is considering another floating LNG facility. And because of the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic and Slovakia are looking for alternative supplies of raw materials so that they can stop taking them from Russia. The Slovak state gas company SPP has concluded contracts for the purchase of such quantities of LNG and natural gas from Norway that Slovakia will cover about 65 percent of its consumption by these deliveries by the end of next year.

Poland already plans to build a floating LNG storage facility and convert it back to a gaseous state. This facility, known by the English abbreviation FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit), will be located near Gdańsk on the Baltic coast.

The capacity to convert back to the gaseous state will be six billion cubic meters of gas per year. Warsaw expects to become operational in 2026. Poland already has one LNG terminal with a capacity of 6.2 billion cubic meters, Reuters reported.

“We can consider different options. We could open another FSRU facility and rent another vessel, but that would be the responsibility of our partners, “Moskwová told BiznesAlert.

According to the minister, Poland wants the FSRU facility to be part of an EU plan called REPowerEU, which aims to end the purchase of energy from Russia in the Union. Moskw said the capacity of the facility to convert LNG back to a gaseous state could be six or 12 billion cubic meters, depending on interest in neighboring countries.

Poland can compensate consumers for higher prices

The Minister also noted that Poland does not need an extraordinary tax in order to be able to redistribute part of the significantly higher profits of energy companies to consumers and thus compensate them for the sharp rise in energy prices. The energy sector in Poland is dominated by companies in which the state has the main say and which are required to ensure energy security, she said.

The Czech Minister of Industry, Jozef Síkela, has previously told the E15 daily that the Czech Republic is negotiating the lease of the capacity of a floating LNG terminal, specifically with the Netherlands, Germany and Poland.

The Prime Minister of the North German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Manuela Schwesig, then stated that Germany needed LNG terminals not only on the North Sea coast, but also on the Baltic coast to supply the east of the country and the Czech Republic.
