Poland – Iceland. Paulo Sousa and the liar’s paradox | Euro 2020

While against Russia a week ago, the Portuguese did not want to reveal all the cards, in the clash with Iceland, the general rehearsal before Euro 2020, he could have already attempted the strongest possible combination. It could therefore seem that only Grzegorz Krychowiak and Mateusz Klich would retain a place in the gala eleven for the first match of Euro 2020 from the starting line-up for the match with Sborna. And it is still possible, but after the friendly game against Iceland, even more question marks arose.

On Tuesday, Sousa made only six changes from the clash with Russia. Could it be, then, that Przemysław Frankowski and Tymoteusz Puchacz were to play the pendulum roles, and not Kamil Jóźwiak and Maciej Rybus tried on to this role? Was the present selector Tomasz Kędziora, absent at the first training camp, to be part of the defense line instead of Bartosz Bereszyński? More questions than answers.

Just before the big tournament, the selectors usually prefer to put up the best line-up. It’s simply too late for camouflages, confusing clues and applying surprising solutions. This is even more surprising in the case of Sousa, who did not have too many opportunities to test his chosen ones.

The Portuguese’s attitude during these two matches can be compared to the liar’s paradox. Because when a liar says he is lying, is he telling the truth or is he lying? And if Sousa made one bluff (against Russia), did he bluff again against Iceland or did he bet on the best squad?

We will know the answer in less than a week in Saint Petersburg.
