Poland is not supplying more weapons to Ukraine because it is focusing on its own armaments, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said, AFP reported.
This statement was made a few hours after Warsaw urgently summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland to protest against the words of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, delivered to the UN General Assembly in New York.
“We are no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine, because we are arming ourselves with more modern weapons”Morawiecki told Polish private television Polsat about Poland’s military and humanitarian support for Ukraine despite the conflict over Ukrainian grain.
The Polish prime minister did not specify when Poland, one of Ukraine’s biggest arms suppliers, stopped supplying arms to it, or whether it was related to the grain conflict.
“We are focusing on rapidly modernizing and arming the Polish army to make it one of the most powerful land armies in Europe in the shortest possible time”he explained.
Morawiecki also clarified that the military hub located in the city of Rzeszów, in the southeastern part of the country, through which Western equipment for Ukraine passes, is working normally.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the UN General Assembly that some countries are pretending to stand in solidarity with Ukraine, indirectly supporting Russia.
The Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs reacted to these statements by saying that this is a false thesis against Poland and it is especially unjustified considering that Poland has supported Ukraine since the first days of the war.
Tensions between Poland and Ukraine, sparked by the grain conflict over Warsaw’s ban on Ukrainian grain imports to protect the interests of Polish producers, have intensified in recent days.
Ukraine announced that it is referring to the World Trade Organization. And Poland’s prime minister warned on Wednesday that he would expand the ban on Ukrainian products if Kiev escalates the conflict over the Polish grain embargo.
Ukraine reacted quickly to this warning and called on Poland to put emotions aside and adopt a constructive approach in this dispute over Ukrainian grain exports.
Fanzia, meanwhile, expressed regret over the tensions caused by the conflict over Ukrainian cereals, the import of which Warsaw has banned to protect the interests of its farmers, AFP reported.
“These tensions are regrettable”, said the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna in an interview with France Press. She added that in these tensions she sees a reflection of internal political arguments.
On Friday, Brussels announced the end of the ban on Ukrainian grain imports, a decision taken in May by five EU member states. But the announcement raised eyebrows and prompted a unilateral embargo by Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, after which Kiev responded on Monday that it would refer the matter to the World Trade Organization.
“The European Commission carried out a very precise study that allowed to end the temporary mechanism that was created to allow some European countries to have more special regulations regarding the import into them of Ukrainian cereals”Catherine Colonna recalled.
She expressed this opinion after a meeting of the UN Security Council, organized on the occasion of the visit to the UN headquarters by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Colonna recalled that the EC did its research very carefully.
“It is regrettable that these tensions arise when there is no turmoil in the markets, and perhaps domestic political arguments on the part of some of our regrettable partners are pushing them to take this position, which nothing justifies.”she added.
Moscow must heed the calls and stop the war in Ukraine, Catherine Colonna added in the same interview for France Press. She recalled that appeals are made from almost all countries.
“Russia must understand here (the UN Security Council) as well as in the UN General Assembly that almost all countries call on it to immediately cease its aggression against Ukraine.”Catherine Colonna said after the Council meeting, in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also participated.
“Yes, ideas of peace are advancing”Colonna pointed out, noting that in the Council many non-European or North American countries have expressed their concern as the war stagnates and causes consequences in the form of casualties, food insecurity, violations of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.
Asked about possible talks with her Russian counterpart, Colonna said he was briefly at the Council meeting today. She added that he came, gave his speech, full of half-truths, as usual, and lies, and left. Colonna dismissed the idea that discussions with Lavrov would be helpful.
