The capital of Poland – Warsaw will spend 117 million zlotys ($30 million) in the next 2-3 years. The funds are for bomb shelters and other security measures. The information comes from the mayor Rafal Tszaskovski, quoted by “Reuters”.
The decision comes against the background of the war in neighboring Ukraine, which has been going on for three years. Although Poland, a member of NATO, has assured its citizens that its place in the alliance guarantees their safety from a Russian attack, the Russian invasion has prompted it to prepare for potential strikes.
“On our own initiative, we took an inventory of shelter places,” explained the mayor.
Underground parking lots and subway stations are among the roughly 7 million square meters of space in Warsaw that could serve as shelters, he said.
“117 million zlotys for improving safety – these are funds for the next two to three years, and we are ready to allocate more money for this purpose,” Tszaskovski added.
He said hospitals would be prepared for threats and members of the public would be trained on how to act in emergencies.
In 2022, authorities reported that fire departments were inspecting the condition of 62,000 bomb shelters across the country.
