Poland Firmly Rejects Illegal Migration, Presents Concrete Plan at European Council Summit

Poland will say a “firm no” to accepting illegal migrants and will present a concrete plan for managing migration at the European Council summit in Granada, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press conference in Warsaw with Head of State Andrzej Duda.

The “dictate of Brussels” does not solve the migration problem, but “creates new problems,” Morawiecki said at a press conference before the summit in Granada, where he promised a “hard” veto on the EU migration package. In fact, the EU plan “means inviting hundreds of ships loaded with illegal economic migrants into Europe,” the Polish prime minister argued.

“We don’t want a second Lampedusa in Poland. We have reached a turning point when it will be decided how Poland’s borders will be interpreted in the future,” he continued, adding that for Poles “the border is sacred.”

Mateusz Morawiecki and Andrzej Duda called on Polish voters to take part in a referendum on the distribution of migrants, which is to be held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections on October 15. President Duda, who is heading to Porto for a meeting of heads of state, said the referendum will give the ruling forces the opportunity to clearly represent the will of society in the EU forum.

“Warsaw does not agree that the ruling elite in Europe is trying to impose its own ideological position on European nations. The most important thing is the will of the people,” he believes.

The issue of migration and border security, he said, largely determines the future of the European Union and Poland. Andrzej Duda emphasized that on the issue of migration, steps must be taken to prevent the problem and fulfill the obligations of EU member states. “One of the main obligations of member states is to protect the EU’s borders,” and Poland is fulfilling this, the president said.
