Poland-Belarus border blockade, ‘because every euro trade with Russia kills Ukrainian citizens’

Protesters have been blocking the largest border crossing between the European Union and Belarus since this morning. Near the Polish city of Kukuryki, just before the large Belarusian city of Brest, hundreds of activists stand on the road with Polish and Ukrainian flags. With the protest they want to cut an important transport artery for goods to Russia.

Around noon, hundreds of trucks are already standing still on the side of the road. The traffic jam in front of the border then amounts to more than 25 kilometers, to the satisfaction of the activists.

The demand: a trade embargo

“Every euro trade with Russia kills Ukrainian citizens,” it sounds from the hastily built podium about 200 meters from the customs building. The protesters demand that the EU declare a blanket trade embargo against Russia. Despite the already strict sanctions, hundreds of trucks with goods are still driving towards Russia every day.
